Gemstones

     "A diamond is nothing but a piece of coal that stuck it out."  Ever heard that one before?  Well, the idea is correct for most all stones.  The heat from the earth's core, the cooling in the atmosphere or water, even the pressures withstood create "rocks".  The chemical makeup of those rocks is what makes them Gemstones.  Gemstones are precious and semi-precious rocks that are, shall we say, cleaned up a bit to expose the best of their beauty!
     The color of some gemstones comes from the minerals they contain.  Azurite and Malachite contain copper.  Rhodochrosite contains manganese and Garnet contains chromium.  Fluorite contains calcium.  But this is not true of all rocks.  For instance, Lapis Lazuli derives its color from the various arrangements of its electrons!  Sounds like this is getting to be a hard subject, huh?
