Turquoise
Turquoise
is formed by the natural alteration of aluminum-bearing surface rocks, with
copper derived from weathering of copper sulfides, and
phosphates.
It is a popular gemstone because of its blue color
and delicate veining. Attempts to synthesize Turquoise have not
been successful, but many times mixtures of copper and aluminum phosphates,
which are similar in color, are sold as Turquoise.
True Turquoise
occurs in dense masses, crusts and veinlets, and vary in color from pale blue to
blue-green to green. Minute crystals that are transparent bright blue are
rare.
